Meditation

Meditation has been practiced for thousands of years and is part of many religious teachings, however you do not have to be religious to meditate.

The value and benefits of meditation are now well recognised and it can be done by all ages – from children to the elderly.

Meditation is a tool that enables us to quieten the mind and creates feelings of inner peace and serenity. Studies now show that regular meditation can improve physical and mental health as well as increase self awareness and deal with stress.

Meditation is a method of controlling the mind and there are many different ways to do it. Usually you start with relaxation and then the mind is given a point of focus eg the breath, a candle flame, a mantra, an affirmation. Every time your mind then wanders you bring it back to your point of focus. This may be difficult to start with but with regular practice it becomes easier and you begin to notice the benefits. Start with 5 minutes daily and then increase gradually. The important thing is to practice daily, preferably at the same time and in the same place.

Meditation should be enjoyable. Here are some helpful hints:

Create a space for your meditation practice – a spare room or a spot in a quiet room.

Be comfortable – sit up straight in a chair or sit on the floor either cross legged or kneeling. You could also lie down but this is not ideal as you may fall asleep.

Ensure room is at the right temperature for you.

Light a candle or incense stick.

Play soft background music.
